Virginia Whisky and Distilled Spirits
Belmont Farm Moonshine Distillery (16 miles): Belmont Farm is a 195-acre estate where they not only distill in solid copper pot stills, but grow the corn, wheat and barley used for their whiskey. Using a family recipe to cook the corn mash and distilling in a 3000 gallon copper pot still equals a taste the family owned and operated distillery is proud of. Seen on Discovery Channel's show Moonshiners and home to Tim Smith's Climax, tour the property and taste their whiskey products. And see if you're tough enough for their Virginia Lighting.
Copper Fox Distillery (35 miles): Copper Fox starts with hand-malting their own barley, then flavoring the grain with apple and cherry wood smoke. The spirit is aged with new and used apple wood and oak chips inside used bourbon barrels. Copper Fox produces a single malt whisky, a rye whisky and a gin.
Silverback Distillery (50 miles): Silverback Distillery produces vodka, gin and grain spirit. Their rye whiskey and bourbon are on the way. Surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Rockfish River, Silverback has partnered with local Virginia farmers for all of their rye, winter wheat, white corn and malted barley grains. They are also heavily committed to being the industry leaders in innovative "green" distilling and production methodologies.
Virginia Distillery Company (60 miles): With thier Virginia Highland Malt Whisky at 92 points gold with Wine Enthusiast, they will be releasing their Commonwealth Collection shortly and in a few years time their Virginia Single Malt whisky. Distilled with Scottish and UK malt and aged in Virginia in wine, sherry, or bouron barrels, VA Distillery Co shows slow is the way to go!
Catoctin Creek (83 miles): Pronounced Ka-TOCK-tin, the name derives from the Indian tribal name "Kittocton" which, legend has it, meant "place of many deer". Catoctin describes a range of mountains and the creek which flows past the distillery. Producing distilled products that are certified Organic and Kosher, Catoctin's flagship whisky, Roundstone Rye has won international awards. They produce gin, brandy and fruit brandies as well.
