John Madison Suite
History and Hospitality, Comfort and Charm
The John Madison Suite is named for one of its Civil War occupants, John Madison Chapman. John Madison Chapman was a great-nephew of President James Madison, a Justice of the Orange County Court, and Mayor of the Town of Orange.
This charming bed and breakfast suite is one of the two most historic accommodations at the Holladay House Bed and Breakfast. The room dates to approximately 1830, and all of the woodwork and trim is original, including the decorative antebellum mantel and fireplace in front of the bed. In 1862, at the height of the Civil War, the Seventh Virginia Cavalry battled the First Vermont, Fifth New York, and the First Maryland Cavalries on Main Street in front of the house, a battle which the Chapman family could have observed from the second-story vantage point afforded by this comfortable room.
Throughout the early 1900s, this room served as Dr. and Mrs. Lewis Holladay’s sitting room and bedroom. Now, the room is a large, elegantly decorated romantic suite, perfect for an anniversary or honeymoon. The overstuffed queen-sized cherry four-poster bed is accompanied by a gas fireplace with the original historic mantel. The sitting room adjoins with a comfy couch and cozy chair with ottoman facing the television and DVD player. The large private bath with tub and shower is in-room.
If you love history, you will love staying in the only inn in Orange that was standing during James Madison’s lifetime!
The antebellum mantel and fireplace add an appealing formality to this historic bed and breakfast suite. In the winter months, the gas fireplace make this our most popular suite for an intimate romantic getaway.
